From unboxing to first secured transaction
Read this guide fully before you start — especially the recovery phrase and verification steps. The order matters.

Inspect the packaging and device
Before anything else, inspect the box for signs of tampering. The anti-tamper seal should be intact. The device should not have a recovery phrase or PIN pre-set — a genuine Ledger Wallet always arrives blank. If either of these conditions is not met, contact Ledger Wallet support before proceeding.
WarningA pre-set recovery phrase means the device has been accessed. Return it immediately. Never use a device someone else has configured.

Set your PIN on the device
Power on the device and choose a 4–8 digit PIN using the physical buttons. Choose something unique and not guessable — not a birthday, not 1234. The PIN is entered on the device itself, not on the computer. After three incorrect attempts, the device resets and must be restored from the recovery phrase.

Write the 24-word recovery phrase slowly
The device generates and displays 24 words. Write each word on the paper Recovery Sheet included in the box, in order, numbered. Check every word twice. These 24 words are the complete backup for every asset across every chain your wallet will ever hold.
NeverTake a photo of the phrase. Type it into any app or website. Store it in a notes app, password manager, or cloud service. Send it in any message. The phrase written on paper is safe; the phrase digitally is a vulnerability.
DoMake a second paper copy and store it in a separate, secure physical location. Consider a metal backup plate for fire and water resistance.

Confirm the phrase on device
The device asks you to confirm specific words. This catches transcription errors before any funds arrive. If a word is wrong, fix the paper backup now, before proceeding.

Install Ledger Live from ledger.com
Go directly to ledger.com and download Ledger Live for your platform. Do not search for it in a browser and click the first result — fake versions exist. Open Ledger Live, connect the device, and follow the on-screen account setup. Install the coin apps you need through the App Catalog.
NoteThe device has limited storage for apps. Install only the coins you actively use. Apps can be removed and reinstalled at any time without affecting your keys or balances.

Verify your receive address on the device screen
In Ledger Live, click the Receive button and choose an account. The full receive address appears in Ledger Live and simultaneously on the device screen. Verify they match character by character using the device display as the authoritative source. Only share the address after this verification.
AlwaysVerify receive addresses on the device. Malware can display a different address in software while the device shows the real one.

Send a small test transaction
Send a small test amount to the verified address and confirm it arrives. Then send a small portion back to another address you control — verifying the destination address on the device screen before confirming. This confirms the complete setup works before you move significant amounts.
Three things to never forget
The 24-word phrase is your only backup. Lose it and there is no recovery option. Protect it like cash.
The device screen is the source of truth. Always verify addresses on the hardware, not the computer.
No one from Ledger Wallet support will ever ask for your 24-word phrase. Any request is a scam.
